Layovers can be stressful ordeals. Short layovers can lead to missed flights or anxious sprints through an airport, while long layovers can feel like an eternity. The amenities and services offered at an airport can also impact whether a layover is a positive or negative experience.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) offers an abundant selection of restaurants, shops, and strategic distribution of lounges, which makes Bush Airport ideal for long layovers, according to MarketWatch. Oh, and our Wi-Fi received the maximum rating, too!

MarketWatch analyzed data across nearly 20 metrics — from cleanliness to food and beverage ratings — to determine which major U.S. airports are best for layovers whether you’re a frequent flier or traveling with family.

Key Findings

  • Based on the MarketWatch survey, the best airport for layovers is Bush Airport. IAH received the highest rating for food and beverage options.
  • The best airport for layovers for frequent fliers is Bush Airport.

Bush Airport had the highest overall score, leading the rest of the top 10 airports in food and beverage choice rating, shop selection rating and stores per passenger per hour. The Houston hub also had high ratings for food and beverage prices and staff service, along with the maximum rating for ease of Wi-Fi login.

Only three airports, including Bush Airport, ranked in the top 10 overall and in the top 10 for both frequent fliers and families.

According to FinanceBuzz, William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) ranks among the best U.S. airports for a long layover. FinanaceBuzz evaluated factors such as airport size, the availability of lounges and food, flight delays and cancellation frequency.

  • Less than 3% of departing flights at Hobby Airport end up canceled.
