Houston, known as Space City, is poised for another leap into the future as the Houston Spaceport gears up for its second phase of development. Situated at Ellington Airport, less than 20 miles south of Downtown Houston, the Spaceport has emerged as a pivotal player in the global landscape of space exploration since its inception less than a decade ago.
“The vision for the Houston Spaceport has always been ambitious,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports. “Our vision is to create a hub for aviation and aerospace enterprises that will shape the future of commercial spaceflight.”
With a focus on supporting horizontal launching and landing of suborbital, reusable launch vehicles, and growing aerospace manufacturing in the region, the Spaceport is a testament to Houston's commitment to leading the way in the emerging commercial realm of space flight.
In 2015, the Houston Spaceport made history by becoming the 10th FAA-Licensed commercial Spaceport, marking a significant milestone in the city's journey toward becoming a key player in the next chapter of human space exploration. What sets the Houston Spaceport apart is its urban location, making it the world’s first truly urban Spaceport and positioning it uniquely to integrate with one of the world’s largest international travel infrastructures.

“Reflecting on its meteoric rise, the Spaceport has seen remarkable growth in a short span of time. From concepts on paper to the opening of Axiom Space, Collins Aerospace, and Intuitive Machines, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,” said Arturo Machuca, Director of Ellington Airport and the Houston Spaceport. “These anchor tenants, collectively holding about $5 billion in contracts with NASA and other notable aerospace companies, are not just shaping the future of space exploration but injecting vitality into Houston’s economy.”
Axiom Space, for instance, recently completed its third commercial human spaceflight mission to the International Space Station, marking the first all-European commercial astronaut mission to the ISS. The Axiom Station Assembly Integration and Test Building opened at the Houston Spaceport in December 2023. It represents a historic milestone as Houston becomes home to the development and construction of human-rated spacecraft for the first time.
Collins Aerospace, on the other hand, is enabling humankind to live, work, and play in space through its state-of-the-art facility and next-generation spacesuit development. The company's collaboration with the Distil Innovation Center powered by Stellar Access underscores Houston's commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the aerospace sector.
Similarly, Intuitive Machines made history by completing the first commercial lunar landing, signaling the U.S.’s return to the moon and opening new frontiers in space exploration. Their Lunar Operations Center at the Spaceport is a testament to Houston's pivotal role in NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.
As the Houston Spaceport prepares for its second phase of development, exciting opportunities lie ahead. Plans include the construction of a taxiway to connect Ellington Airport and the Spaceport, as well as a roadway linking Phase 1 infrastructure to Highway 3. Expansion of the EDGE Center, in partnership with San Jacinto College, will cater to the growing demands for workforce development, ensuring that Houston remains at the forefront of aerospace innovation.
