Ellington Airport Approaching Centennial Birthday
Houston’s oldest airport is nearing an important milestone. Ellington Airport (EFD) was first established by the Army Air Service on May 21, 1917 and turned 99 in May.
The airport was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 and supports the operations of the United States military, NASA, and a variety of general aviation tenants. The airport is home to the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow and is also the place where many of the astronauts from the world-renowned Johnson Space Center receive their ongoing space training.
Ellington Airport is also home to the Houston Spaceport, the nation's 10th commercial spaceport.
