Amidst the bustling activity of Houston's airports, there exists a group of unsung heroes whose dedication ensures the safety of millions of passengers and airport personnel. As the nation observes National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week from April 14 to April 20, Houston Airports takes a moment to salute the steadfast commitment of its Airport Operations Center teams.
"The Airport Operations Center teams work diligently day in and day out to help keep our facilities running smoothly and ensure the safety of our guests and their fellow Houston Airports team members," said Steve Runge, Chief of Operations for Houston Airports. "Their efforts behind the scenes are fundamental to our operations, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to excellence."

- An estimated 180,000 people work for airlines, concessions, cargo, airport contractors and other aviation and aerospace stakeholders.
In the last year, the staff at Airport Operations Centers (AOC) at Bush and Hobby airports collectively managed over 215,000 calls, diligently working around the clock to address many situations, from routine inquiries to critical emergencies and severe weather.
In 2023:
- Bush Airport AOC answered 164,489 calls and responded to 106,259 incidents.
- Hobby Airport AOC answered 57,920 calls and responded to 71,908 incidents.
The AOC teams played a pivotal role in airport operations, from managing traffic calls to addressing customer service concerns, responding to medical emergencies and coordinating responses to aircraft incidents.

National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, observed annually during the second week of April, aims to honor the contributions of 911 call takers, dispatchers and other public safety telecommunications professionals.
“These individuals form the critical link between those needing emergency assistance and the first responders who provide aid,” said Monica Horvath, Division Manager of Landside Operations at Hobby Airport. “The Airport Operations Center team embodies the spirit of this observance, functioning as the unseen guardians who monitor, coordinate, and respond to a myriad of incidents within the airport environment.”
Their responsibilities range from managing emergency situations to coordinating responses to medical emergencies, security breaches and even wildlife hazards on airport property.
"Our Airport Operations Center team members exemplify professionalism, resilience, and unwavering dedication in the face of adversity," said Bobby Miller, Division Manager of Landside Operations at Bush Airport. "Their vigilance and quick thinking play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of our airports, day in and day out."
