Almost 200 employees with the Houston Airport System (HAS) and their families braved cold and rainy weather for National "Wreaths Across America" Day at Houston National Cemetery.

The special wreath laying ceremony is celebrated nationally on December 14 at cemeteries to honor fallen veterans.

“The participation from employees was amazing,” said Houston Airport System’s Director of Airport Initiatives and Volunteer Services Caroline Schneider. “It was great to come together as an organization to show our support and thank veterans and their families for the sacrifices they have made to ensure our nation’s freedom and security.”

Since the program’s start in 1992, Wreaths Across America has donated more than 1.3 million wreaths to cemeteries in the United States and abroad. Each year, more than 850 ceremonies are held to coincide with the laying of the wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

Ross Underhill, William P. Hobby Airport’s Assistant General Manager served in the U.S. Army for 15 years. He felt participating in the event was important, and he encouraged his staff and family members to participate as well.

“It was a rewarding experience for everyone involved, children and adults alike,” Underhill said. “I look forward to HAS supporting this and similar events in the future.”
