Houston is home to one of the most on-time airports in the world!
An annual report by travel analyst OAG lists George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) as one of the most efficient airports in the country when measuring on-time performance for flights.
In the annual OAG Punctuality League report, Bush Airport’s rate of on-time arrivals and departures in 2017 — at 82.43 percent — is the sixth-best in the world among “major” airports, and the fourth-best among the U.S. airports in that category. “Major” airports are defined as facilities that provide service for 20 to 30 million departing passengers per year.
The 82.43 percent rate for Bush Airport is the best among the Texas airports listed in the OAG Punctuality League categories, including San Antonio at 81.99 percent and Austin-Bergstrom at 81.57 percent in the “Medium” category (5 to 10 million departing passengers), and Dallas-Fort Worth at 81.36 percent in the “Mega” category (30-plus million departing passengers).
“Providing excellent customer service takes a real commitment, and it takes great partnerships,” Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz said. “The commitment to make sure our passengers and customers can count on getting to and from their destinations on time is one the Houston Airport System and our air carrier partners take very seriously, and we will continue to strive, not to merely maintain but also improve on that commitment every day. This rating is a great recognition, but it’s not the end of our work — it’s just the beginning.”
The ratings of the OAG Punctuality League is based on 57 million flight records using full-year data from 2017 to create a ranking of the best on-time performance for the world’s largest airlines and airports. To qualify for inclusion in the Punctuality League, the OAG schedules database must have flight status data for at least 80 percent of all scheduled flights operated by an airline or for an airport. OAG’s definition of on-time performance is flights that arrive or depart within 14 minutes and 59 seconds (under 15 minutes) of their scheduled arrival/departure times. Cancellations are also included.
