Spirit’s growth at Bush Intercontinental continues with launch of Latin American routes
May 28, 2015

Spirit Airlines’ expansion into the international market from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) continued this week with the inaugural flights for non-stop service to four more destinations in Latin American markets.

Just three weeks after inaugural service to destinations in Mexico, the low-cost carrier took off from Houston for Managua, Nicaragua; San Jose, Costa Rica; San Pedro Sula, Honduras; and San Salvador, El Salvador.

The launch is part of an expansion announced late in 2014, an addition of 10 new nonstop destinations out of IAH, bringing the total of routes served by Spirit to 22.  Earlier in May, Spirit began international service to Cancun, Los Cabos and Toluca in Mexico. The ultra low cost carrier also began domestic service to Tampa and Baltimore/Washington in March, and nonstop service to Oakland/San Francisco in April.

“Spirit Airlines undoubtedly recognizes the opportunities associated with an economy as dynamic as Houston’s,” said Houston Aviation Director Mario C. Diaz. “They’ve already proven their commitment to an aggressive growth strategy on the domestic front, and now we’re excited to see Spirit apply that same philosophy to Houston’s international route map.”

Spirit’s growth nearly doubled the nonstop service offered by the carrier from IAH, adding to a roster that already includes flights to Chicago-O’Hare, Denver, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, Orlando, and San Diego. The new routes will make Spirit one of the busiest carriers operating out of IAH.
