HAS Performing Arts Program brings “Harmony” to airport travelers
September 10, 2015

The Houston Airport System (HAS) is committed to maintaining “Houston Friendly” customer service of the highest standards. As part of that effort, the “Harmony in the Air” Performing Arts Program was created to provide passengers with an enjoyable experience from roadway to runway.

“Harmony in the Air” is aimed at creating a stress-free, happy atmosphere for passengers and visitors through live performances featuring a diverse repertoire of classical, contemporary classical, smooth jazz and international music.

“Harmony in the Air” promotes the arts and culture of Houston and provides invaluable opportunities to increase exposure of local musicians. Every musician participating in the Program is in high-demand, performing concurrently at various music venues throughout Houston.

“Arts and culture contribute to our quality of life and are an expression of the soul of a city,” Mayor Annise Parker said.  “Houston prides itself on being the most diverse city in the nation.  The arts are a vital part of our Houston fabric which advances our economy and shapes and defines our community.”

Performances take place in the atrium, beyond the security check point at William P. Hobby (HOU) and in the walkway that connects terminal “A” North and terminal “A” South at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

The City of Houston’s Aviation Director, Mario Diaz says the varied array of musical offerings is not accident, since “Harmony in the Air” is aimed to reflect Houston’s dynamic personality.

“Houston has so much to offer in the way of culture” Diaz said. “As we think about and explore ways to become a five-star global air service gateway, we wanted to find a way to enhance our passenger’s experience as they transition through our terminals, and this program allows us to do just that while actively supporting the arts in Houston and the region. It provides passengers an opportunity to relax and stop and experience something unexpected and very special.”

The following groups are currently participating in “Harmony in the Air”:

Ars Lyrica, Baroque string quartet and piano recitals

Bob Chadwick’s Jazz Trio, Eclectic blend of international world music with jazz intermixed

Divisi Strings, Avant-garde string quartet that mixes classical music with today’s hottest hits

Musiqa, Modern string ensemble and classical saxophone quartet

Solero Flamenco, Houston's premier flamenco performance company

“Harmony in the Air,” is fully sponsored by the Houston Airport System, and is managed by Maricela Kruseman, who is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Performing Arts Program.

“Houston’s rich and diverse performing arts culture is a large part of what makes it such a special city,” Kruseman said.  “What better place to put that culture on display than Houston’s airports?  The excellent performers featured as part of ‘Harmony in the Air’ impeccably demonstrate the top-flight talent and hospitality Houston has to offer.”
