The Road to Super Bowl LI Ends in Houston
January 6, 2017

Houston’s Super Bowl kick-off celebration commences on Jan. 30, 2017. Between 100,000 and 125,000 daily passengers are expected during the two weeks surrounding Super Bowl LI with Monday Feb. 6 expected to be the busiest as fans depart from the festivities.

“Houston Airports is excited to welcome Super Bowl LI guests to the ‘City with No Limits,’ said Houston Airports Chief Operating Officer Jesus Saenz. “The Houston Airport System is working closely with the Houston Super Bowl committee and our airport partners to ensure the visitors coming for the game have all the information necessary to make their trip easy and convenient. At the same time, working with the committee’s volunteer group and our own Houston Friendly initiative, we are working to provide the kind of atmosphere and ambiance at the airports that complement both the fun and the importance of hosting the Super Bowl.”

Preparations for Super Bowl LI began even before the Denver Broncos claimed the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl 50. In February 2016, Houston Airports dedicated a committee of employees from various work areas to lead the preparation needed to handle the increase in passenger traffic. Committee members observed the work and preparation taking place at San Francisco International and Oakland International airports to better understand unforeseen issues that may arise and ensure a pleasant airport experience.

Shortly after, the first steps on the road to Houston were underway when two Super Bowl LI Countdown Clocks were unveiled at both George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and William P. Hobby (HOU) airports.

Now with the big game just weeks away, operational plans are firmly in place and  final touches on directional signage and entertainment are being made to give visitors a Houston Friendly welcome to the City with No Limits.

Houston Airports has a dedicated Super Bowl website for each airport to provide need-to-know information.

TSA Security

In addition, passengers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with TSA procedures to ensure they are in compliance with guidelines. Passengers are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in carry-on bags and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less per item. Often souvenir programs from big sporting events, like the Super Bowl, include hologram technology that can prompt additional screening of luggage by the TSA. To avoid that issue, and help move the screening process along, it is best to bring those programs in your hand and alert TSA that you are bringing it through.  For more information visit tsa.gov.

Drop off/Pick up

For those picking up/dropping visitors, all Houston Airports are “active loading” facilities; this means parking is not permitted at terminal curb areas. Please take advantage of the cell phone lots to alleviate traffic congestion from continuous circling of the facilities. There are two cell phone lots at Bush Intercontinental — one just off northbound John F. Kennedy Boulevard and one off westbound Will Clayton Boulevard — and at Hobby Airport a cell phone lot is available on westbound Airport Boulevard, just before the entrance to the airport.

Super Bowl LI is the third Super Bowl held in Houston and the second played in NRG Stadium. Miami beat Minnesota in Super Bowl VIII played at Rice Stadium in 1974, and New England beat Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.
